Bill,
Windows 95 really isn't that bad. I know it is a Microsoft
product but then again so is Windows 3.1. Whatever your stand-point,
most would agree that 95 is a better product than 3.1.
However I do have one word of warning if you are planning to
upgrade. When you install 95 on top of Windows 3.1 it very kindly
attempts to migrate all your applications. All your old DLLs - bits of
ancient crumbling software which have been accreting in a deep brown
layer on your hard disk for these past years.
This is a difficult task - and it is in some cases impossible -
resulting in a flakey and unreliable installation of 95. My advice would
be to install 95 afresh. Hiding your previous version of Windows. Take
off, nuke the site from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.
This will require you to re-install software and ideally find new
95 versions of drivers for your hardware. This is a price well worth
paying. 90% of the problems I have heard with 95 were caused by legacy
